What is a Catholic funeral in Singapore?
Catholic funerals are guided by the Rite of Christian Burial — a formal liturgical process marking the deceased's passage while offering comfort through the Church's sacraments. How a Catholic funeral works in Singapore
The vigil (wake)
The wake is typically held at an HDB void deck, a funeral parlour, or the family home. The Rosary is often prayed on the evening before the funeral day. Flowers are appropriate; incense is not used.

What to prepare for the undertaker
A rosary is commonly passed to the undertaker to be placed with the deceased, either in the hands or within the casket. It reflects the person's devotion and faith, and having it accompany them is a small, meaningful gesture many Catholic families choose to observe. If the family has one that belonged to the deceased, or one that holds particular significance, this is the item to hand over. If your family has other personal or devotional items you'd like included, mention this to your funeral director directly — most will accommodate it.

Not every Catholic church allows a wake to be held on its premises. Reasons vary — limited space, the deceased not having been a registered member of that parish, or simply a standing policy against hosting wakes at all. While your funeral director can usually help coordinate this, it's worth calling the specific church directly beforehand to confirm, and in some cases you may need to visit the parish's admin office in person to settle the paperwork before anything is confirmed.
The Requiem Mass
The funeral Mass is held at the deceased's parish church. The priest leads scripture readings, the Liturgy of the Eucharist, a homily, and prayers. Family members may give a eulogy. The Mass itself typically runs 45 minutes to an hour.
All are welcome to attend. Non-Catholics do not receive communion but may fully participate in prayers and hymns.

Timing works backwards from the cremation slot, not the other way round. Once the cremation slot at Mandai is confirmed, the church then allocates a Mass timing that fits around it. Settling the cremation slot first, before trying to lock in the Mass time with the parish, will save you a round of back-and-forth.
Cremation or burial
The Catholic Church has permitted cremation since 1963. Ashes should be stored in a sacred place — a Catholic columbarium or approved memorial garden. Scattering at sea or keeping ashes at home is discouraged by the Church.
