Why most "funeral saving tips" articles are useless
Search this topic and you'll mostly get "compare quotes," "ask for an itemised bill," and "don't be pressured into upgrades," which is all true and all completely unhelpful without real numbers attached. Nobody tells you what the upgrade actually costs, so you can't tell whether skipping it saves you S$50 or S$2,000. This is the version with the numbers in it, using the real pricing I use myself with families.
The biggest single lever: which tier you pick
Most funeral packages in Singapore come in tiers, however they're labelled. The pattern that matters: a "Standard" or mid-tier package typically runs about 1.6× the base tier's price, for an upgraded backdrop and a limousine hearse instead of the standard vehicle. That's not a small markup, it can be the difference between a S$4,500 and a S$7,200 base package before a single add-on is chosen. If neither the backdrop nor the hearse genuinely matters to your family, the base tier is not a compromise, it's the same funeral, with the visual upgrades removed. This is, by a wide margin, the single largest optional cost in most funerals.

The casket upgrade — the second biggest lever
A basic 6-sided full wood casket is included in every package at no extra cost — this is the true base, not an upgrade. Moving to a 4-sided half-glass casket typically adds around S$880, an 8-sided half-glass casket around S$2,000, and a full-glass casket around S$3,188. This upgrade almost never comes up until you're physically at the showroom, in person, already emotionally invested, which is precisely why it's worth knowing the real range before that moment happens. Catering — the trap most families don't see coming
Real per-pax catering runs roughly S$19–S$23 per person depending on group size, with a minimum headcount that catches people off guard. Under 15 pax, and you're often paying a worse per-person rate because you're below the caterer's minimum order, arranging your own food for a small group can genuinely work out cheaper. Over 60 pax, pricing usually needs a direct quote rather than a flat per-pax rate. Know your realistic headcount before you book catering, not after, since the tier you fall into changes the maths meaningfully.
Worth being realistic here too: even with a large crowd attending, catered food at a wake often ends up only half-eaten — people come and go, and not everyone stays to eat. For smaller or uncertain headcounts, ordering through a food-delivery app as guests arrive can genuinely work out cheaper and less wasteful than committing to a fixed catering headcount upfront.

Some venues charge a separate catering surcharge, often around S$500, if you don't arrange catering directly through them. This is rarely mentioned upfront. Always ask explicitly: "is there a surcharge if I bring in outside catering?" before you commit to a venue.

What's genuinely non-negotiable, so you don't waste energy fighting it
Not everything is a place to save. A chiller for multi-day wakes, mourning garments for Buddhist and Taoist families, and the cremation fee itself are functionally required, not upsells, and most honest vendors fold these into the base price rather than itemising them separately specifically because they were never a real choice. Trying to negotiate these down usually just wastes energy that's better spent scrutinising the tier and casket decisions above, where the real money actually sits.
