⚠️ Important
A quick, honest note: Gems Lumière is a genuine partner Kenneth works with, not his own service. Everything below is sourced from their own materials. For anything specific, pricing confirmation, booking a consultation, questions about your particular situation, WhatsApp Venessa directly, she's the right person to speak to.
What a life diamond actually is
The carbon in hair is carefully extracted and processed under extreme heat and pressure until the atoms rearrange into the crystal lattice of a diamond. What comes out the other end isn't a symbolic object or a resin-and-ash trinket, it's a genuine, IGI-certified diamond, identical to a mined one, just grown from your loved one's own carbon rather than the earth's.
Worth knowing too: Gems Lumière doesn't only make these for bereavement. Their own positioning covers a wider range of moments, a birth, a marriage, a family milestone, a beloved pet, alongside remembering someone no longer here. This page focuses specifically on the bereavement use case, since that's what's relevant here, but it's honest to say that's one part of what they do, not the whole of it.
What you'd actually need to provide
A gathering of hair, clean and dry, roughly 10 grams for a 1-carat diamond. That's a genuinely small amount, not a dramatic haircut, and it's collected and handled as part of the consultation process rather than something you need to prepare elaborately in advance.
The real timeline
About five and a half months from first conversation to the day the piece is collected. The growth phase itself, the diamond actually forming in the laboratory press, takes roughly four months on its own.
| Stage | Timing |
|---|---|
| Consultation & sample | Week 1 |
| Sample to laboratory | Week 2 |
| Growth & design | Weeks 2–16 (~4 months) |
| Crafting at the atelier | Weeks 16–22 |
| Presentation & collection | Week 23 |
Payment is staged across the process: 30% deposit at consultation, 50% when the diamond returns from the lab, and the final 20% at collection.
Real pricing, in full
Every piece is priced in three separate parts, the diamond, any accent gemstones, and the setting, added together to get the full price. Nothing bundled or obscured.
A. The diamond, by carat

💡 Tip
A real worked example, directly from Gems Lumière's own pricing guide: a 1ct oval life diamond (S$3,980 × 1.20 shape multiplier = S$4,776) + 2ct of coloured accent stones (S$1,900) + a medium-complexity platinum setting (S$3,000) comes to S$9,676 total.
Gems Lumière's stated commitments
From their own materials, worth knowing before a consultation:
• Every quotation is itemised, every cost line shown, nothing hidden • If a family arrives uncertain or grieving, they say they'll recommend the simpler tier, not the bigger one • If a requested piece is larger than the stated budget comfortably allows, they say they'll recommend scaling down • The full process is designed and monitored by their founder, a GIA-certified gemologist • In the event of a lab failure, Gems Lumière states they absorb the replacement cost, the family pays nothing further
Who's behind it
Gems Lumière (永光) is founded by Venessa Lim, a GIA-certified gemologist, and operates as a sister atelier to Gems Origin, a bespoke jeweller in Singapore since 1980.
